What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage, or MLD, is a light massage technique that focuses on the lymphatic system. This can help to reduce swelling throughout the body and is particularly useful for clients suffering from lymphedema. Jennifer Plourde (RMT) and Elizabeth Snook (RMT) both provide MLD treatment.
What to expect during a Manual Lymphatic Drainage treatment?
Jennifer or Elizabeth will meet with you and assess your needs for massage therapy and/or MLD treatment. If MLD is indicated then you can expect a long, gentle treatment – for at least 30 minutes. Afterwards, they will recommend homecare and assess if bandaging is necessary in cases of lymphedema. For clients seeking MLD who do not have lymphedema you may be able to have MLD within a larger massage therapy treatment.
Other conditions where MLD may be helpful:
~ Migraine headaches;
~ Chronic sinusitis;
~ Sprains (i.e. ankle, wrist);
~ Swelling related to venous insufficiency;
~ Pre and post surgery to aid in healing;
~ General tissue health and relaxation; and
~ Aid in healing of scar tissue.
There are several conditions that involve swelling that cannot be treated with MLD:
~ Liver disease;
~ Congestive Heart Failure;
~ Kidney disease; and
~ Malnutrition.
Additionally, MLD will not help with weight loss or to reduce cellulite.
